ADDITIVES IN OUR FOOD! SPREAD THE WORD, TO KNOW WHAT POISON ARE WE EATING!
People of all ages recognize that a healthy lifestyle leads to a better appearance. ‘Real food’ brings an elevated desire for foods that provide positive nutrient benefits. Yet some foods have E-numbers so do we really know what we are eating?
As the saying goes, ask a child to read out the ingredients on the food label. If the child can’t read it, do not eat it!
So what are E-numbers? E numbers are codes for substances that are food additives for use within the European Union. Safety assessment and approval are the responsibility of the European Food Safety Authority. The “E” stands for “Europe”.
Having a single unified list for food additives was first agreed upon in 1962 with colours. In 1964 preservatives were added, 1970 antioxidants and 1974 emulsifiers, stabilisers, thickeners and gelling agents were included.
The numbering scheme follows that of the International Numbering System (INS) as determined by the Codex Alimentarius committee (codes of practice) which was formed in 1963.
These E-numbers below are highly teratogenic that can cause congenital abnormalities, which are also called birth defects and mutagenic that changes the genetic material, usually DNA of an organism and thus increases the frequency of mutations the normal level as many mutations cause cancer. The E-numbers are used enhance colouring (yellow, orange or red) in jam or compote, mustard or other foods.
Here is a list containing E-numbers

- Tocopherol (Vitamin E) E-306 is a fat-soluble found on most foods; whole grain cereals, corn and cottonseed oils, egg yolks, meat and milk. It is essential to the life of red blood cells and helps the supply of oxygen to the heart and muscles.
- Carrageenan E-407 is extracted from red seaweed. It is used to maintain a homogenous appearance in many foods especially foods that contain fats such as; dessert gels, relishes, pizza, barbecue sauces, fruit drink powders and frozen concentrates, imitation coffee creams and imitation coffee creams to name few.
- Lecithin E-322 can be found in white egg yolk and soya bean oil. As an emulsifier it lowers the surface tension of water enhancing to combining oils, fats and water in such foods like chocolate, ice cream, margarine and mayonnaise. In margarine it has the added advantage of preventing water seepage, so preventing spitting when frying. In bread and bakery products it increases volume and also acts as an anti-staling agent therefore extending shelf life.
- Riboflavin – vitamin B2 or E-300 can be found in diary products, dry-roasted soybeans, liver, oysters, lean meats, mushrooms, broccoli, avocados and salmon. Oily fish, including mackerel, eel and herring are also rich sources of riboflavin. The list also includes eggs, shellfish, wild rice, dried peas, millet, sunflower seeds and beans. Dark leafy green vegetables, such as asparagus and spinach, whole grain products, and mushrooms are also rich in riboflavin. Cabbage, carrots, apples, figs and berries have a comparatively low level of Vitamin B2. Fortunately, vitamin B2 is not lost during cooking, unlike many other vitamins. However, it is destroyed by strong light and baking soda.
Riboflavin plays a major role in the production of energy by assisting in the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Benefits include; *Regulates thyroid activity *Prevents acne *Regulates normal growth and reproduction *Protects the nervous system *Ensures healthy eyes, corneas and perfect vision *Helps to slow HIV/AIDS *Boosts mineral absorption *Protects the digestive area *Healthy fetal development *Increases immunity.
- Ascorbic acid -Vitamin C or E-440 is one of the most powerful antioxidants in the body. Benefits include; *Treats the common cold *Lowers hypertension *Treats vasodilation (dilatation of blood vessels) *Cures lead toxicity *Cures cataracts (eye disorder) *Combats strokes *Stabalises moods *Builds immunity *Speeds up the process of healing wounds *Controls asthma *Cures diabetes *Prevents heart diseases.

As you can see, the list keeps getting longer in order to preserve natural foods for enduring periods of time.
These E-numbers in the food industry are the most commonly used food additives. Thus, each of us can generally know how these additives affect us but remember that you are entitled to choose what you eat.
This article is FYI. I do not want to scare anyone, but to create awareness about additives and what you eat. It’s a global trend in this fast way of life to buy ready meals or fast food to save time. The more colourful the products are the more artificial they are!
Romania is obliged to join these rules, so the consequences of consumption of preserved foods and pre-cooked will increase more too often. It’s not a conspiracy, nor is anyone judging you to say the least, fast and pre-packed foods are becoming more expensive and definitely an unhealthy way of life.
